Sarah's Story

This is the story of Sarah, my mom and our team SURVIVOR!!!!

Perfectly Pink!!!
Hi, my name is Sarah Ellery.  Last November, I had the honor of being at the cheering stations twice during the 3-day walk to visit a friend of mine who was participating in the walk.  At that time, my daughter Lizzy said she wanted to participate in the walk “next year”.  I wished her well.
I went for my annual mammogram in October and was told I needed a biopsy.  After the biopsy, my Dr. told me what every woman fears.  “You have estrogen positive invasive ductal carcinoma.”  Cancer.  A plethora of thoughts, concerns and fears went through my head.  But I knew I had to get through it.  I elected to have a lumpectomy which was performed on December 31.  One week later I was having radiation.  It was a fairly new type which involved a balloon catheter inserted in the breast which the radiation was placed through 2 times a day for one week.  Then it was back to the Dr. for a follow up and I was given a good prognosis.
The day after finishing my radiation, my daughter Beckie and I attended an information meeting for the 3-day walk for November 2010.  We were both still very emotional from all we had been through but through our tears, we knew that she, Lizzy and I needed to do this walk to help raise awareness and  fund research for a cure.  Training for a walk like this isn’t easy and mostly not fun.  But I am committed to reach as many women as I can to get their mammograms faithfully.  Early detection DOES save lives.  I am living, yes I said living, proof.  I am walking for my survivor friends, Sandra, Vita, Catalina, Kathi, as well as my sister Pat and my mother-in-law Pat; for all those women who are survivors and for those who have left loved ones behind; and for those women and men who are still fighting their battle. Cancer knows no friends, only victims.  I will keep charging ahead because I truly believe “everyone deserves a lifetime.”
